Did you know?
- Agung is considered a sacred mountain by the Balinese, who believe it is the abode of the gods
- The summit of Agung is the highest point on the island of Bali, reaching approximately 3,031 meters above sea level
- One of the most devastating eruptions occurred in 1963, killing about 1,500 people and destroying many villages. The eruption also affected the climate, temporarily lowering global temperatures
- Mount Agung became active again in 2017. The eruptions forced the evacuation of thousands of people and the temporary closure of the international airport in Denpasar due to ash emissions
- In Balinese mythology, Mount Agung holds enormous significance. According to legend, it was created from the central peak of Mount Meru, the axis of the universe, making it a place of special reverence and respect among the Balinese
Three routes to choose from
- The short route starts from Pura Pasar Agung temple (1,400 m) and leads to the lower summit of the crater (2,900 m). Average trekking duration (ascent and descent) is about 9 hours, starting at 01:00.
- The medium route starts from Pura Pasar Agung (1,400 m) and leads to the volcano summit (3,142 m), including a trek along the crater. Stunning views open up at 1,900 meters. At 2,500 m there is a checkpoint where they assess whether you are ready to continue climbing or not. Departure at 23:30. Duration is approximately 12 hours.
- The long route begins at Pura Besakih temple (700 m) and leads to the volcano summit (3,142 m). Approximate trekking duration is 15 hours. Departure at 22:00.

What to bring:
- Rain poncho.
- Warm clothing (warm sweater and jacket -- preferably windproof).
- Gloves.
- Leggings or tights.
- Comfortable hiking footwear (sneakers or trekking shoes).
- At least 2.5 liters of water and high-energy snacks (cookies, chocolate).
- Power bank, camera or GoPro, drone.
- Cash in Indonesian Rupiah.
Trekking difficulty: challenging. Ascent: 5 hours (average time). Average total trekking time is 9 to 15 hours, depending on the chosen route.
Contraindications for mountain trekking:
- Exacerbation of chronic diseases
- Cardiovascular diseases (especially severe forms of coronary heart disease, with pulmonary and respiratory insufficiency): coronary artery disease, angina, recent myocardial infarction (less than 6 months ago), aneurysm of major vessels, heart and aorta, cardiac arrhythmia, tachycardia, hypertension, etc.
- Respiratory diseases
- Joint and musculoskeletal disorders.
