Borobudur is an outstanding Buddhist architectural monument built in the 7th-8th centuries. This grand temple is often regarded as one of the wonders of the world. The complex consists of eight tiers: the first five symbolize earthly life, while the upper three represent the spiritual and higher realms. According to Buddhist teaching, one should ascend to the top in a clockwise spiral from right to left to walk the sacred path, which covers approximately five kilometers. We will climb to the top and walk this sacred path -- finding inspiration, releasing the past, cleansing ourselves, and at the summit, envisioning our future.
The upper tiers are adorned with 72 stupas, each containing stone Buddha statues with various hand gestures (mudras). The central stupa, standing 8 meters tall, symbolizes Mount Meru, considered the center of the universe in ancient Indian mythology.
We will step into an interactive room where the world comes alive with each step, and a wave of our hand adds color to the story unfolding before us.
Ride in a retro Volkswagen through rice paddies, visiting the Reclining Buddha statue on a hilltop. Here you will find an abandoned pool, Buddha statues, and pavilions with bell-shaped roofs -- a perfect spot for sunrise and meditation. From the top, panoramic views unfold across the surroundings: the volcanoes Sumbing and Merapi, Menoreh Hill, while Borobudur appears tiny in the distance.
We will make a stop at a themed park with retro cars and period buildings, immerse ourselves in the past, enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee, and continue our journey. We visit the major monuments of the Kedu Valley, which was once a place of shrine worship -- Candi Mendut. This ancient temple, discovered in 1838, is home to a sacred tree over 500 years old. It is believed that Borobudur and Mendut were once connected by a grand road enclosed by walls on both sides with numerous towers, niches, and sculptures. However, nothing remains of them except a headless seated Buddha statue (85 cm tall) that does not fit any of the niches in Borobudur -- perhaps such statues were placed in niches along the roadside walls. Lunch*.
Then we head to Prambanan -- a magnificent temple complex and the largest Hindu temple of ancient Java, believed to have been built in the early 10th century. The name Prambanan translates as "Slender Maiden," which is linked to the statue of the Goddess Durga located in the main sanctuary. The entire complex comprises 224 temples dedicated to the Trimurti: Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu, as well as their vahanas -- Nandi (bull) for Shiva, Angsa (goose) for Brahma, and Garuda (eagle) for Vishnu. The temple walls feature carved depictions of stories and scenes from the Ramayana. According to legend, Prambanan was built out of unrequited love, and its stone walls conceal more than one secret. Our guide will lift the veil and share the legends of this extraordinary place.

The moderately challenging ascent follows a well-maintained trail and takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. If you prefer not to walk, local porters can carry you to the top for about 800 000 IDR.
At the summit, you can see sulfuric gas burning with a blue flame, visible after sunset from 6:00 PM to 4:30 AM. We greet the sunrise at the crater rim of this mighty volcano, taking stunning photos against the backdrop of the turquoise lake, mountains, and sulfur deposits.
